Vladimir Illichov

Painter · architect · PhD in architecture · member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine

Architecture, urban memory, landscape and still life. Creator of the “Architecture in Painting” style: structure and space first, then colour and mood.

Biography

Volodymyr Illichov is a Ukrainian painter, architect, educator and researcher. His work explores architecture, urban memory, landscape, still life and experimental painting. His training as an architect shaped his visual language and his long study of the historic urban fabric of Odesa.

He graduated from the Grekov Odesa Art College and the Faculty of Architecture of the Odesa Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture, and completed doctoral research on urban-environment design in Sofia. He taught the fundamentals of architecture and, from 2018 to 2023, painting and drawing to architecture students at Odesa National Maritime University. He has taken part in international and national exhibitions, biennials and museum projects.

Method

“Architecture in Painting” is Volodymyr’s style: a city or an object is built like a building — structure, perspective, shadow — and the paint goes over an exact frame. His courses on architecture, landscape and still life teach it.
