Painting techniques · Blade & Socks

50 Shades of Blade & Socks

These are the painting moves of the Blade & Socks technique — a construction kit from which every painting is assembled: a sock, a blade, a kolinsky brush and damar varnish, joined by newspaper, sugar water, gelatin and a toothbrush. Here you remove paint rather than add it: the graphic image is scraped out of a volumetric underpainting with a blade, and the light is wiped back to the canvas with a sock. It is quick, quiet and effective painting.

  • We do not build paint up in layers — we take it off the canvas.
  • The drawing is not applied but scraped out of a volumetric underpainting.
  • Deep half-tones and shadows stay as underpainting.
  • Speed: a painting is finished in a single day.

The secret of Blade&Socks
Materials for Blade & Socks
Marble glazing — the base of the underpainting
8 Blade & Socks training modules

How a painting is built: six levels

  1. 1 Underpaintingkolinsky brush, blade, newspaper

On a fine-grained canvas we squeeze oil paints of the chosen palette straight onto the surface and spread them with a kolinsky brush, an architectural blade and newspaper. Then we press the paint down with the blade using the “marble glazing” method — this gives the painting its basic colour scheme.

  2. 2 Socksock

With an ordinary black sock pulled over the hand we wipe out the light and shade of the objects, leaving the shadows untouched. We touch the canvas with the index and middle fingers, constantly shifting the sock to a clean patch, until we reach the light canvas in the tone we need — a watercolour effect is guaranteed.

  3. 3 Bladeblade

With an architectural blade we scrape out the light and the two half-tones of the object in a graphic manner, resting the little finger on the canvas. As with a pencil, we move the blade in different directions to build the structure, materiality and weight of the form — this is “graphics within painting”.

  4. 4 Flat brushflat kolinsky brush

With a flat kolinsky brush, no. 6, 8 or 10, we finish the painting in impasto oils; the palette is a large white plate under the right hand, and the sock in the left hand wipes the brush. The realistic form is completed with very thick paint and as little as possible.

  5. 5 Glazingdamar varnish, kolinsky brush, sock

Two days later, when the paint is almost dry, we mix damar varnish with a colour on the palette and, with a clean kolinsky brush, fill the gaps of bare canvas, blotting them with the sock at once. With the same mixture we strengthen the form and cast shadows and set the overall depth of the painting.

  6. 6 Luminous websmall round kolinsky brush

With a small round kolinsky brush we lay the finest light lines and dots — a luminous web that pulls the painting together and makes it shimmer.

After ten modules

  1. 1Constructive thinking and a compositional approach

Such a student builds harmonious compositions, uses geometric forms with confidence and finds balanced visual solutions, keeping chaos out of the work.

  2. 2Command of light, shade and volume

Through an in-depth study of light and shade, cast shadows and form shadows, the student renders the volume of faces, objects and whole scenes clearly, making images more convincing and emotionally rich.

  3. 3A personal hand and originality

Having gone through the whole mentoring programme, the student develops a style of their own. Using signature techniques such as Blade & Socks, they create work that stands out from the conventional.

  4. 4The ability to turn an idea into a painting

The student can travel from an idea, through sketches and plans, to the finished work: they think through the theme, symbolism, subject and visual metaphors on their own and bring them to life.

  5. 5Ready for professional and exhibition work

Ten modules give a solid foundation: the skills to prepare a solo exhibition, hang a show, present your paintings and work with connoisseurs and potential buyers. The student is ready to practise at a professional level.
